Garrett's Birthday Mitch was asked to perform special duty at the races. For his birthday, all Garrett Newell wanted was to get a chance to ride in the Mitch Gibbs race car. So during intermission Mitch and Crew Member Jim Raymond went over to the grandstand area with the 2g machine and proceeded to give Garrett his birthday wish. A ride around the race track with his favorite driver.
There is much more to this story than meets the eye. This story is about a very courageous little boy.
On September 02, 1994 at the age of four, Garrett was caught in an elevator and suffered from anoxia syndrome (lack of oxygen to the brain). He was Air Lifted to Wilson Memorial Hospital where the Doctors said if he made it at all he would never be able to do anything except lay in bed. "I am going to be a race car driver someday" is what he tells his mom.
Well Garrett is now 13 and in spite of what the doctors say Garrett is improving! It's been a slow process but it is progress. Garrett's motor skills and speech were affected. His progress has been steady but slow. Garrett's speech sounds like a stroke victim. His progress in walking is on the verge of walking alone with the aide of a walker. The dexterity in his left hand is worse than his right hand but he can use both hands. Best of all he has very little memory damage.
A note from Garrett's mother Lorraine;
"Charlene Gibbs (Mitch's Mother) came to see Garrett in Wilson hospital on Sunday morning (the same weekend of the accident) I told her to tell Mitch to bring home the trophy from the feature at Utica-Rome and dedicate it to Garrett. Mitch did so, and the trophy is on his dresser and will always be there. Mitch is his idol. So what he did for Garrett was very special to all of us. Because when Garrett is happy we all are."...
